The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) is playing a critical role in the fight against COVID-19 - prioritising, funding and delivering urgent research into vaccines, treatments, diagnostics and serious mental health issues. Studies are assessed as urgent if they need to take place during the emergency phase of the pandemic when infection rates are high and if they will deliver a public health impact within 12 months. Studies which require support from the NIHR Clinical Research Network are badged as Urgent Public Health research and are fast-tracked for delivery across the NHS. Studies which require funding are assessed through a partnership between NIHR and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).
